### What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer?

In direct thermal printing, the heat of the print head darkens the paper itself and nothing else is needed. In thermal transfer, the head melts ink from a ribbon onto the label, which lets you print on more materials and gives a longer-lasting print.
